Wrong Side of the Fence

Chris Maestas’s (0009) new solo exhibition brings together around 20 digital works in static image format, exploring themes of identity, division, and resilience. Drawing on the artist’s personal experiences growing up in 1990s Los Angeles, the show reflects on the visible and invisible boundaries that shape opportunity, belonging, and selfhood.

CONCEPT

Boundaries, texture, and identity

The exhibition evokes the idea of growing up on the “wrong side of the fence”, not just as a literal, territorial reference, but as a social, cultural, and political metaphor. Created using artificial intelligence and built in layers, the works reveal rich textures and organic compositions. Straddling the urban and the natural, 0009’s practice transforms digital media into a sensitive language where identity and transformation take visual form.

The artist behind the pieces

Born in 1984, Chris Maestas began his creative journey in Los Angeles’s urban culture as a graffiti writer and skateboarder, influences that continue to energize the DNA of his work. He later trained in Automotive and Industrial Design, developing a career as a car designer, an experience that brought formal precision and a meticulous attention to detail to his artistic practice.
